keeping on track

I have a little secret...it helps me to not go totally broke. It is my savior! I love it. I wish sometimes items I want would appear then I wouldn't feel guilty for buying them! Shall I explain?

Ok, so as much as I would like to spend with abandon I wasn't born into the Hilton family (or Vanderbilt or any uber wealthy family you can think of!) nor am I racking in mounds & mounds of dough at the job! So I budget. I have to think about the purchases I want.  I save for the items I have thought about for a while (trying to no make impulse buys!)

So I have a list (I have more than one list, but this isn't a discussion about that! I may or may not have like 10 lists, in my cell phone sad but true - I like lists.) When an item pops up in a mag or I keep 'needing' in my mind it goes on the list. I try to stick to the list. I am not going to say I don't ever skip away from the list - but I do try to stick to it as much as I can. I also have items that never make it to the list.... like new bras and undies...I don't think those deserve the list. Those are necessities and I can talk my way through those pricey purchases any day! (Hey I am no equal-opportunity-undies wearer! I have favs and those are the only ones I wear! Another post for another time!) Same for make-up and skin care.

So here is the list as it was mid-day yesterday (when I emailed it to myself). It has since been updated - leather jacket (the Anthro one), stalked and SCORE (on sweet SALE!)!!! Ok so back to the list. Here it is.

So once I purchase an item off the list, I move it to the bottom, until I make sure A- I like it, B- it is the right one. There are lots and LOTS of things not on this list that I like or would NEED to have but.....these are the smart choices I should be making. {That dress from H&M this past weekend - not on the list, but 20% off and it is totally fun! oh well, I didn't look at the list then! But it is kinda leather-ish so it is sorta...see I can talk my way through a lot ;)}

How do you stay on track? Or am I just a silly-list lady (Hubs don't answer that!)?

  1. Great idea! I think sometimes it is hard to resist a deal when you are in the store, but I think that really keeping a list of the things you need/want is a great way to get the items that your closet really needs and will complement what you already have.

  3. All about lists...I was able to stay on budget by literally taking Christmas lists (from kids) and cyber shopping yesterday. I completely avoided all those wonderfully priced end caps that I am so good at justifying why it's needed!!! xoxo

ps I have been trying to simplify our lives SO I have been selling all the extra things in our house (and trust me we have tons, hubby shops more than I do) on ebay or craigslist.

  5. hehehe I think we are twins. I currently have a "Nicole Wish List" on my iPhone that I'm making my way through. It is so helpful, especially when shopping because I often get side-tracked and forgot what I really want. Love your list by the way, I just got some faux leather leggings and I love them more than I thought I would!

  10. I don't have a fancy iphone list :(. However, we are definitely alike in the list aspect because I carry a notebook around and have a wishlist in it. I like to break my list up into seasons.

I love how you have a super expensive YSL Muse on that list in the midst of all you other wants/needs.

  13. Well we talked about this one yesterday a bit, but I'm a big fan of the list too. Doing a closet inventory reminds me that there's a bunch in there so I don't have to go buying new things. The worst is jackets and shoes. I'm in great shape for those - I scored major deals the past couple years and require, essentially, ZERO of those this year. Except a black leather or suede bootie which I'm hoping for a MAJOR sale of some sort on...HALP!

No mas with the buying for me. The horse is dead til spring. Time to dismount.

  18. I keep lists in my phone too! So when my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year, it was easy to rattle off a bunch of things. Usually I'm stumped and can't think of anything.

  19. Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea
shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed the
shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab
inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to
    tell someone!

Here is my blog post: test
